Piano Curriculum (PLAN):
First, I will give a FREE assessment of the child to see what level they are already on. I will also get to know the parents/guardian as well as the child, to see what learning style suits them best.
Level 1: Rookie- Hey! Your kid is just starting out, but that’s ok! In Level 1, I will help your kid to learn the BASICS OF THE BASICS, which are the MOST important part of piano in order to be successful! We will start by learning the 7 notes on a piano, as well as learning finger positions, and how to position and move your hands. We will also cover pieces such as: Mary Had a Little Lamb, Hot Cross Buns, and more! These pieces will reinforce the lessons that we learn, and will help prepare your child for Level 2!
Level 2: Apprentice - Hey! Your kid shows a lot of potential, and a basic understanding of notes and finger positions! In Level 2, I will now introduce your kid basic symbols like: time signatures, repeat signs and rests, as well as quarter, half, dotted half and whole notes. We will also begin to introduce the concept of playing with both hands (Unison)! We will also cover pieces such as Ode to Joy, The King’s March, Square Dance and more! These pieces will reinforce the lessons that we learn, and will help prepare you child for Level 3!
Level 3: Skilled - Hey! Your kid is now ready to add some emotion into their music! In Level 3, we will begin to learn things like dynamics and ritartandos, as well as 8th notes. We will also begin to learn what 2nds and 3rds are, as well as legato and staccato. We will also study some simple speeds such as Allegro, Adagio and Moderato. We will also cover pieces such as Amigos, The Giggling Goblins, The Interval Song and more! These pieces will reinforce the lessons that we learn, and will help prepare your child for Level 4!
Level 4: Practiced - Hey! Your kid is now ready to spice things up a bit! In Level 4, we will begin to learn things like sharps, flats and naturals (these will help us with key signatures), as well as 5ths and 8ths. We will also be advancing to one of the more challenging concepts of piano, HAND INDEPENDENCE, meaning we will learn how to play different melodies with different hands. We will also cover pieces such as Alouette, On the Bridge of Avignon, Trumpet Voluntary and more! These pieces will reinforce the lessons that we learn, and will help prepare you child for Level 5!
Level 5: Experienced - Hey! Your kid has learned one of the hardest lessons in piano, and is now ready to take on new challenges! We will be learning things like fermatas and DC Al Fines, as well as learning how to play with more expression in their pieces. We will also cover things like phrasing, as well as 4ths and 7ths. We will also cover pieces such as The Bagpipe Song, Elgar’s Find, The Rainbow and more! These pieces will reinforce the lessons that we learn, and will help prepare your child for the FINAL BOSS!
THE FINAL BOSS - Hi! Your kid is now almost ready to graduate the BASICS! In this level, we will be preparing a set of pieces for your child to play and perform as a way to show and reinforce the skills that they have learned! I will be teaching them these pieces, introducing the pedal, as well as answering any questions they may have. We will also go over everything they learned previously. These lessons will make sure that they are ready to advance with knowledge of all the most important basics of piano!
Hopefully this helps you to get a better sense of what your child will be learning, and what to expect! If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me. Contact information is on the “Contact” page.
